So the free (to all testers) openSUSE 11.0 box came today, and it’s looking pretty stylish and even comes with a couple of stickers:

So far I’ve been really impressed with the latest release. Not only have the reviews been pretty much consistently positive because of some of the shiny new features (like installer and fast package management), but also in general it’s just running very well. I installed it on some 10 different desktop and laptop machines over the past few weeks, and every single one has gone very smoothly.

KDE 4.1

There are a lot of nice things in the upcoming 4.1, so I’ll just briefly mention a few of those visual ones which particularly interest me:

There have been several additions to the KWin composite effects including wobbly windows:

And some new window switching effects:

A desktop cube plugin is also in the works.

The Oxygen icon theme is also a real pleasure to use (coming in different colours):

Worth a read is the recently published Sneak Peeks at openSUSE 11.0: KDE article (digg), which also features a good interview with openSUSE/KDE developer Stephan Binner. It goes over the media changes, the versions of KDE available, and the work done over the last 9 months in the upcoming openSUSE 11.0 release, coming in just a couple of days now!

I’ve been following the development version (with of course KDE 4.0) for some time now and I’m really pleased about the way it has turned out! Distrowatch and others have been giving some glowing reviews, and the general feel from testers of the release appears to be incredibly positive. The new installer, sexy artwork, super-fast package management, and new official KDE 4 live CD is really making a big change. So congratulations to everyone who made it happen!

With the exams (and University!) having come to an end, I managed to create an updated version of the 1-click-installation for codecs in the latest openSUSE 11.0 RC1. This will be at the exact same place at the old link, as 1-click-install gives you the possibility for different preferences for different distributions. So here are the links:

This will install things like DVD and MP3 support, Win32 codecs, flash and java (if you installed from the live CD), unrestricted xine codecs (for DiVX etc.), as well as the latest Amarok and K3b codecs (for the KDE ymp).

You can also optionally install things like Dragon Player, VLC and Opera by hitting the “Customise” button when the 1-click-installer starts up.

As always, if you have problems or suggestions on what to include in the YMP, please do let me know!

Command-Not-Found

Another thing I recommend trying out is Command-not-found (for 11.0: 1-click-install), which is very handy for general usage in the shell. Demonstration of what it does:

20:52 francis:~> dragon

The program ‘dragon’ can be found in the following package(s):
* dragonplayer (/usr/bin/dragon)

Try: sudo zypper install dragonplayer

bash: dragon: command not found
20:52 francis:~> amarokk

Did you mean: ‘amarok’ ?

bash: amarokk: command not found
20:52 francis:~> ifconfig

Program ‘ifconfig’ is present in package ‘net-tools’, which is installed on your system.

Full path leading to ‘ifconfig’ is ‘/sbin/ifconfig’.

Please check your $PATH or maybe program ‘ifconfig’ is intended to be run only by root.

bash: ifconfig: command not found

After you’ve installed it, see the /usr/share/doc/packages/command-not-found/README file for how to enable it by default.

Obligatory Screenshots of 11.0

Though I’ve been running KDE 4 for a few months, it’s great to see it even more polished and working more nicely in the latest RC. With the import of the new artwork, everything looks and feels really wonderful:

Cyberorg also just mentioned on IRC that openSUSE has gone to no. 1 on distrowatch for the last week — great news!

When: Friday, April 4th, 2008 through Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in every timezone.
Where: #opensuse-buildservice

Another good opportunity to get to grips with the openSUSE Build Service, the easiest way to package your applications for many distributions, in one place, and — thanks to AMD — on a build host of over 100 CPUs. Currently supported distributions are:

CentOS 5

Debian Etch

Fedora 7

Fedora 8

Fedora Core 6

Mandriva 2006

Mandriva 2007

Mandriva 2008

RHEL 4

RHEL 5

SLES 9

SLE 10

SUSE Linux 10.1

openSUSE 10.2

openSUSE 10.3

openSUSE Factory

Ubuntu 6.06

Ubuntu 7.04

Ubuntu 7.10

With the build service you can also generate YMP files used for 1-Click-Install, which has been supported for some time on openSUSE, although a client has already also been created for Ubuntu and Debian.

There will be many KDE, GNOME and build service <strike>celebrities</strike> hackers around to help with any questions you might have. Getting a build service account is instant, and the software itself is of course also free software licensed under the GPL. There is a pretty web interface:

…and a command-line client, so do drop by on the day if you need any help while playing around with either of these.

KDE Bug Day: Konqueror Bugs

When: 0:00 UTC - 23:59 UTC on April 6th 2008
Where: #kde-bugs

Another bug squashing day taking place in #kde-bugs this Sunday; the first one in a long time.

So the greatest FOSS event of the year has come to an end. Thousands of geeks, hundreds of talks, and just a really wonderful atmosphere everywhere (see the pictures flowing in). I caught up with my backlog of emails and feeds from Friday and the weekend in only 15 minutes, which pretty much sums up what was happening in the world of FOSS at the time.

Very glad to see successful KDE (with Amarok) and openSUSE booths about. We gave out over a whoopin’ 1000 openSUSE Promo DVDs (Live+Install, with KDE/GNOME/Xfce).

Our KDE 4 desktop received a lot of attention, and unfortunately quite a few crashes at some points as we were running a very recent trunk snapshot. Still, many users very impressed with Dolphin, the new Kate, Gwenview, KWin Composite effects, the Kickoff menu and our super-sized Plasma clock. To put your mind at ease, I can promise you that we have no direct affiliation with Flavor Flave.

Some things in particular that I took from the event:

Linkat: a distribution for the education department in Catalunya

The Jordis presented the very professional Linkat, a SUSE-based Linux distribution now endorsed and promoted by the Catalynian government for schools and communities there, with all kinds of FOSS educational software.

Interesting to hear about the many challenges faced: for example, they were asked to include the latest packages but to also provide long term support. So what did they do? They use openSUSE packages when they need to have the latest-and-greatest (which comes with 2 years of security and update support), and SLED for the base packages and everything else (7 years of support). Watch this space.

The new Sat Solver

Probably the talk that personally interested me the most. Michael gave a quick overview of the workings into making a package management solver. The new one is completely based on standard SAT algorithms (boolean satisfiability problem), which has nice advantages like the simple fact that there are insanely fast algorithms for computing such problems. Such small problems (in comparison) like our “very complex” package management decisions take milliseconds under this model.

This, combined with the new solv files (for repo metadata), makes for extremely fast package management.

Other highlights:

Timo’s very well-attended Kernel, udev, D-Bus, HAL, NetworkManager and Friends gave a really nice and quick insight into how you can debug any problems with this stack using his tidy little event notification application. The example provided was unsupported multimedia keys (surprisingly easy to fix). Will find the web link for it soon.

Nice talk on KIWI which I’ve written about before. The more time that passes, the more I’m convinced that applications designed as distribution-independent tools (like the OBS, PackageKit, Klik, Smolt) like KIWI are completely the way forward.

Great to finally properly meet so many more developers (too many to list).

Huge thanks to Pascal Bleser and the rest of the FOSDEM team working tirelessly to ensure that FOSDEM ran so smoothly. Nice events like that make me very happy; looking forward to FOSDEM 2009!

Apart from the openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 2 release coming this Thursday, there are a couple of exciting things happening in the openSUSE world:

openSUSE Membership

For a long time the openSUSE project had no fully defined way of distinguishing active and continuously helpful people in the openSUSE project. If you’re in the project then it becomes quite palpable quickly who is doing a lot of great stuff and whatnot, but many people in the project echoed a need for better processes of handling, for example, @opensuse.org email addresses and IRC cloaks.

The result of this can be seen by what we think of as openSUSE Members (see the page for all the details). So, if you are doing great stuff for openSUSE, please do apply and let us know!

At the moment only the board members are listed, but during our next meeting I hope to publish a much longer list of openSUSE members. If you are an openSUSE member, please try to provide a wiki page or at least a page where you can specify your contributions so anyone else can easily find out about you.

openSUSE Community Manager: Joe Brockmeier

It’s great to see that after many months of interviews and work for a Chief openSUSE Linux Evangelist, openSUSE has a new community manager: Joe Brockmeier. One thing that has sorely been needed in the openSUSE project is extra marketing and community management. It’s wonderful to see both of these very key and essential issues being tackled and I’m confident now that Joe will do remarkable things for openSUSE.

If you want to find out a little more, take a look at a few of his recent interviews or articles about the new job-position:

..and it had some nice things about it:

Easy to track multiple downloads and their speeds in one window

Integrates well with KDE

But it had a lot of not-so-nice things about it: far too many cluttered and unclear toolbar entries, old-fashioned look, and not that powerful in terms of download capabilities. Anyway, enter KDE4’s KGet:

And a lot of nice things to notice here. Of course the Oxygen icons and style make it look wonderful, but there’s been a lot of shuffling around in the UI here: only four clear text-aligned icons now, for the very common download actions. Downloads can now be sorted into groups, and you can choose to have the view of any particular download expanded:

Save to Location by Extension

This feature was already available in KDE3’s KGet, but it is very handy, not well-known, and can save a lot of time. Here you can also see the changes that the configuration settings of KGet received as well:

Metalinks

Torrent support isn’t available in the 4.0 branch, but work for it is being worked on and available in trunk. Another very exciting fact about the new KGet is the Metalink support. Metalinks are one of the best ways for releasing downloads such as ISOs, which are large and can receive a lot of hype around a release time.

They are small XML files that, when plugged into the client, can use multiple mirrors for download (hence spreading the load), can connect with torrents as well, and also have checksum support so they’re one of the best ways to download large files reliably. In the early stage of a distribution release while the torrents are taking time to pick up, with Metalinks you’ll be downloading from multiple mirrors so you will always get pretty much the maximum speed.

With KGet now all you need to do is drag the Metalink file and the download will start straight away! Above you can see one of these metalink downloads.

Wrapping Up

KGet has probably become the world’s best downloader thanks to the great new work from the developers. If you use KDE, you should seriously consider making it your default download manager (just start it up).

If you’re on openSUSE 10.3, you can install the latest version of it with this 1-click-install:
